Coca-Cola History

John Pemberton was the is responsible for inventing the original recipe for Coca-Cola back in 1885. The original concoction was a syrup, and carbonated water was later added by accident when Pemberton was mixing drinks for a friend. His friends liked the new version so much, that he altered his original formula.

Back in the day, Coke was said to cure a multitude of ailments and diseases, as well as headaches and impotence. By 1888, there were three different versions of Coke on the market, sold by three different companies. One of these companies, Chandler, purchased the rights to the formula in order to cut out the competition. Chandler then incorporated The Coca-Cola Company. The drink became a national icon by it’s 50th anniversary. Bottles of Coke could be purchased in bottles by 1894 and then in cans in 1955. The first bottle was sold in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1899. The first bottling company was opened in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Pemberton’s original formula contained five ounces of coca leaf, or cocaine, per gallon of syrup. The drink once contained about nine milligrams of cocaine per serving. Later, in 1903, it was removed and was replaced with coca flavoring.

In 1985, the Coca-Cola Company introduced “New Coke”. Because many preferred the previous version of the product, and there were many who stopped drinking it until the company reverted back to their original formula. It was then that it was named Coca-Cola Classic.

During the 21st century, there were more changes. Diet Coke, sweetened with artificial flavor was launched in 2005 and Coca-Cola Zero sweetened with artificial sweeteners. In 2006, the My Coke Rewards promotional program was launched. The program allows consumers to enter codes found on specially marked coke packages on their website. Collection of these codes allows you to redeem points for prizes (note that this is another great source for Coke coupons).

By the 21st century, Coke history took another leap in the market. In 2005, the company launched "Diet Coke", sweetened with artificial flavors. Later in 2005, it announced "Coca-Cola Zero", sweetened with artificial sweeteners also hit the market.

Coke is now being sold all over the globe in more than 200 countries. It may possibility be the most well known icon of all time.

Coke history has come a very long way since Pemberton invented the original formula, and continues to grow by leaps and bounds. It is not a surprise that it is one of the leading soft drinks on the market.
